The Scholarship program will offer full academic scholarships for up to two years of study at the post-secondary level that leads to a diploma, post-secondary or post-graduate certificate, or Master’s degree at a college, technical or vocational institute, or university in Canada. The Study in Canada Scholarships program is open to students from all disciplines.

The academic placement must be carried out on a full-time basis at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution located in Canada.

How it works:

Step 1:  Candidate students must first apply for admission to an academic program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Step 2: Canadian post-secondary institution admits a candidate student, and applies for the scholarship on behalf of the student. You don’t have to apply for the scholarship.

Step 3: Whose applications are successful will receive the scholarships.

Amount of Scholarship:

Duration, level and program of study will determine the amount of the scholarship.

  • Programs of one academic year in duration (e.g., two academic terms of up to 4 months each) – up to CAD 60,000
  • Programs of two academic years in duration (e.g., up to 20 months, including four academic terms of up to 4 months each and one intervening spring/summer term of up to 4 months) – up to CAD 120,000

Useful notes:

Candidates are encouraged to indicate their interest in being considered for the Study in Canada Scholarships program when applying. They are responsible for ensuring they meet the admission requirements of their selected institution and academic program. Responsible for providing supporting documents requested within the required timelines lies with the candidates.

Scholarship will cover the following expenses:

  • visa and/or study/work permit fees and/or travel related to the collection of biometrics;
  • economy-class airfare, for the scholarship recipient only, to Canada by the most direct and economical route and return airfare upon completion of the scholarship;
  • health insurance;
  • tuition fees and mandatory expenses for the academic program for up to 20 months, including four academic terms (up to 16 months) and one spring/summer term (up to 4 months) for those enrolled in two-year programs;
  • living expenses, for the scholarship recipient only, such as accommodation, utilities and food;
  • ground transportation expenses, including a public transportation pass; and
  • books and supplies required for the recipient’s study or research, excluding computers and other equipment.

Scholarship duration

Scholarship recipients may commence their studies or research as early as August 2020 for the fall semester but no later than February 2021 for the winter semester. Scholarships will be for a minimum of one academic year and up to a maximum of two academic years (up to 20 months total, including one intervening spring/summer term of up to 4 months). 

Who can apply

Candidate students be citizens of one of the following eligible countries:

Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Comoros, Djibouti, Fiji, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Liberia, Mauritania, Micronesia, Palau, Tonga, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu

Palestinian students from the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem are also eligible.  They may be requested to provide supporting documentation demonstrating their Palestinian identity.

Candidates:

  • must not hold Canadian citizenship and must not have applied for permanent residency in Canada;
  • must apply for admission to a full time academic program at a Canadian post-secondary institution;
  • should indicate their interest in being considered for the Study in Canada Scholarships program when applying;
  • must not already be participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada;
  • may already be enrolled in a degree or diploma program at a college, technical or vocational institute, or university in Canada;
  • must meet the entrance requirements for the proposed program of study at the time of submitting an application; and
  • must possess the linguistic competencies necessary to undertake studies in the language of instruction at the Canadian institution (English or French).

Candidate students must receive admission from Canadian institution recognized by its provincial or territorial government. Candidates are advised to contact the Canadian institution regarding the status of their application.

Application period

Canadian institutions will apply for the scholarship on behalf of eligible students during January to March 2020. It is the responsibility of the Canadian institution to ensure that supporting documents are received by the deadline. 

Selection process

The following guidelines are followed for the review, assessment and selection of applications:

  • All online applications received by the deadline will be pre-screened to ensure they meet eligibility requirements established for the program.
  • Eligible and complete applications, including the supporting documents, will be evaluated based on their potential to strengthen and diversify Canada’s international education engagement, with attention to criteria such as:
    • Diversity of recipient countries/territories of nominated candidate students
    • Broad regional representation of participating Canadian institutions
    • International linkages and internationalization objectives advanced by participating Canadian institutions
    • Gender representation
  • Should there be a larger number of applications than funding available, the Canadian institution will be asked to rank its eligible applications based on its institutional strategic priorities.
